New research finds losing just 80 minutes of sleep a night triggers weight gain, but not through the mechanism scientists assumed
Sleep and weight gain have been linked in research for decades. The explanation has always felt obvious: when you are tired, your hunger hormones shift, you crave high-calorie food, you eat more, and the weight follows. Doctors cite this mechanism constantly. It is baked into public health messaging about sleep.
A new study from Columbia University has tested that assumption in the most controlled way sleep research has managed in humans, and the assumption is wrong.
The researchers recruited 95 adults and put them through two separate phases, each lasting around six weeks, in randomized order. In one phase, participants slept normally. In the other, their bedtime was pushed back 90 minutes, producing an actual reduction of roughly 78 minutes of sleep per night. Critically, this was a crossover design: every participant completed both phases. That means each person served as their own control, holding stable all the individual variables that normally make sleep research messy, including baseline metabolism, genetic predisposition to weight gain, habitual diet, and activity level.
The results from the restricted sleep phase were unambiguous. Participants gained an average of one pound. Waist circumference increased by half a centimeter. Body volume on MRI rose measurably.
Then the researchers looked at why.
The mechanism nobody was looking for
The appetite hormones showed almost nothing. Ghrelin, which signals hunger, barely moved. Leptin, which signals fullness and typically drops with sleep deprivation in older studies, actually edged upward, consistent with the added weight rather than driving excess eating. Total daily energy expenditure was unchanged. The participants were not burning fewer calories overall and they were not eating detectably more.
What changed was movement.
During the sleep-restricted phase, participants spent an average of 17 more minutes per day being sedentary, even after accounting for the extra waking hours the later bedtime gave them. For men and postmenopausal women specifically, the increase was nearly 30 additional minutes of sedentary time per day.
This is the finding that inverts the standard model. The path from lost sleep to gained weight was not through the kitchen. It was through the couch.
“Our study shows that getting adequate sleep may help reduce the risk of weight gain and obesity-related conditions like heart disease and diabetes,” said Marie-Pierre St-Onge, a professor of nutritional medicine at Columbia and the study’s lead researcher. “People tend to gain weight over the course of their adulthood, and even modest sleep loss, the kind that is easy to overlook, appears to contribute to that creep.”
Why mild sleep restriction is the important number
Most sleep deprivation studies use extreme conditions. Four hours of sleep, single nights of total restriction, or laboratory settings that bear no resemblance to how people actually live. The findings from those studies are real but limited, because nobody maintains four-hour sleep schedules for months.
What this study modeled was different. Eighty minutes less sleep per night is the gap between a person who means to be in bed by 10:30 and ends up watching one more episode at midnight. It is the difference between a solid night and an ordinary weeknight. It is the kind of sleep loss that feels harmless, recoverable, and not worth worrying about.
The participants in this trial were adults aged 20 and older who already slept at least seven hours a night and carried elevated cardiometabolic risk. Delaying bedtime by 90 minutes was enough to produce measurable changes in body composition within six weeks.
One pound in six weeks does not sound alarming. Extrapolated across a year, it becomes a different number. And the sedentary behavior finding compounds the picture, because sitting more is itself an independent risk factor for metabolic disease, cardiovascular events, and mortality, regardless of how much someone exercises in a formal session.
What this changes about the advice
The standard guidance on sleep and weight has always emphasized appetite regulation. Eat less at night. Do not let fatigue drive food choices. Avoid late-night snacking. That advice is not wrong, but this study suggests it is incomplete, and may be missing the more important pathway entirely.
If the primary mechanism connecting mild sleep loss to weight gain is reduced movement rather than increased eating, then the intervention looks different. The question becomes not just what you eat when you are tired but how much you move, how often you sit, and whether sleep-deprived fatigue is quietly pulling you toward stillness throughout the day without you registering it as a meaningful change in behavior.
Related analyses from the same research group have found that the same mild sleep restriction produced increased insulin resistance in women with elevated cardiometabolic risk and signs of inflammation in heart tissue. The weight gain finding sits alongside those outcomes as part of a consistent picture: losing less than an hour and a half of sleep per night, over weeks rather than just one bad night, is enough to move metabolic markers in the wrong direction through pathways that are only beginning to be fully mapped.
The study is a pooled analysis of two randomized trials. The crossover design is its main methodological strength. Its limitation is the sample, 95 adults from the New York area with elevated cardiovascular risk, which means the findings may not extend to younger, healthier populations or people who chronically sleep less than seven hours to begin with.
